What is an Intranet?
An Intranet is a system where Internet-like services are provided on a school or organisation's internal network, without being visible to the outside world. Internet-like services typically used on an Intranet include WWW (World Wide Web) pages, IMAP/SMTP email and NNTP newsgroups.

One of the most common uses of an Intranet system is to allow a school or organisation to create web pages containing information on projects, assignments or general news. The ANT Internet Server Suite will allow you -- and if you decide to permit it, pupils -- to host and manage your own web pages.

Can I do this?

The ANT Internet Server Suite includes all of the servers necessary to create your own Intranet system. Using the server suite you can host your own web site, your own news server serving newsgroups created and controlled by you, and your own email and FTP services.

None of the servers require a connection to the outside world, and so they can be used as a safe and convenient way of introducing pupils and teachers alike to the benefits of the Internet without first needing to invest in the additional hardware, phone lines etc. required for full Internet access.
