"I've got lots of older Acorn computers: can I make use of
them for Internet access?"
With the ANT Internet Server Suite, all but the very
oldest Acorn computers can find a new use as Internet access
terminals. Because, in an Internet or Intranet setup, much of the
work is done by the one server computer, quite
low-specification computers can suffice to run the email, web,
and discussion-group software.
Complete "Network computer"
For email access, web browsing, and use of discussion groups,
you can use any Acorn with the following minimum
specification:
 |
RISC OS 3.1 or later |
 |
4Mb or more of RAM |
 |
Ethernet adaptor (network card) |
 |
Hard disc |
Even old A310 computers can be used, if they've been upgraded
with those four extras -- although web browsing will be too slow
to be much fun without an ARM3 processor upgrade too.
Email terminal
If you've got computers that aren't even up to the
specification above, you can still use them just for email and
discussion groups -- if they satisfy this, even less stringent,
list of requirements:
 |
RISC OS 3.1 or later |
 |
2Mb or more of RAM |
 |
Ethernet adaptor (network card) with Acorn Access |
 |
No hard disc required |
An Ethernet adaptor, and possibly a bit more RAM or a RISC OS
upgrade, will bring any Acorn RISC OS computer up to this
specification. Bring those A3000s out of the cupboard!
