One of the most important considerations that must be taken into
account when giving networked access to the Internet is that of
control over what the users will be able to access. Some of these
considerations may be based on what is appropriate for a
particular user or groups of users based on curriculum
activities. Other considerations may be based on preventing users
from accessing unsuitable material on web sites or newsgroups.
No matter what the reasons, it is important that any server
software provides the flexibility which will allow the
administrator to control access on a user or group level.
Access control
The ANT Internet Server Suite includes full control over
which services users or groups can and cannot access. Some of the
options open to you are:
Can the user:
- Read email
- Send email to users on the local network
- Send email to users in the outside world
- Read locally created newsgroups
- Post articles to locally created newsgroups
- Read external newsgroups
- Post articles to external newsgroups
- Access the internal FTP server
- Have limited web access
- Have unrestricted web access
You can see from this screen-shot how easy this is to set up and manage:
Groups management
The user editor supplied with the ANT Internet Server Suite provides
full user grouping facilities. This feature allows you to organise users into
groups who can then have their attributes edited on a group basis.
